Super Street Feature: 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe R-Spec

We don’t often showcase the Hyundai brand here at Super Street. For years, the Korean automaker was never associated with anything that cool or performance-oriented… That is, until the Hyundai Genesis Coupe hit dealerships in 2009. The rear-wheel drive, sporty and sleek Hyundai got our gears turning and over the last five years we’ve seen the number of modified examples growing at shows across the nation. But after walking the halls at SEMA last November, we may have discovered the baddest Genesis Coupe to grace the planet yet—John Pangilinan’s R-Spec model.

John’s no stranger to SS and to the scene for that matter. This is in fact his 12th SEMA build and third project car built for Hyundai Motor America. He started off with a 2.0L turbo R-Spec model. Having driven one of these things before, we know they love to go! The R-Spec already comes with a few cooler features from the standard model such as firmer springs and dampers, larger sway bars, 19-inch wheels and a Torsen LSD. Along with factory Brembos and 274 hp, it’s a good real-world performance car, which steered John toward creating a car that balanced its factory performance with some showstopping looks.

John’s Genesis Coupe received nothing but the best with a custom widebody that wouldn’t take too much away from the original design of the car, a killer Atlantis blue paintjob and top-shelf parts all around. We’ll leave the rest up to John as we ask him a few key questions about his creation:

What was your goal with this car?

The goal was to build a vehicle that was aspirational, yet obtainable for the modern car enthusiast’s lifestyle, where he can drive his car daily and still turn heads at a show. I decided to use only high-quality products for the build and keep it simple.

What part of the car do you admire the most?

I would say it’s the interior. Normally, the R-Spec comes in an all-red interior, but I wanted to simplify the colors and elected to use a mix of black leather and suede from Katzkin to re-wrap the Recaros that were also color-matched to the exterior. The harness bar came out amazing, and the Takata harnesses bring it all together nicely. The Alpine head unit also was a nice touch and looks like it came direct from the factory.

Finally, what was the hardest part of the build?

The most difficult part was the tight time frame, given only about three months to complete the car in time for SEMA. Organization and having great relationships are key, along with selecting the right people to help work on the project. I’m really lucky to work with many talented friends such as designer Jon Sibal, Topo “the widebody king,” Ivan and the team at BP Autosound. Seeing the finished product at the SEMA show within the Hyundai booth makes it all worth it!
